The Inunaki Tunnel (犬鳴トンネル) is another game from Chilla’s Art. Inunaki Tunnel was released on the 19th of November, 2019. The Japanese horror game once again takes on it’s usual stylistic graphics as you walk through an Urban Legend; trying to survive and get the best footage for your YouTube channel.
Graphics
The graphics had the usual clunkiness that Chilla’s Art have displayed in their games I’ve played previously, The Convenience Store and The Closing Shift. The visuals this time were a lot more hazy and I had to have my brightness on my laptop up higher. However, this fitted with the concept very well, while linking in with the signature graphic style of the Developer’s.
Due to the fact that the graphics made it hard to see and therefore make out anything that wasn’t directly in front of me added to the true horror of the game. I never knew what was going to happen or what was around the corner!
Gameplay
The game play itself was simple, but effective. Each area you enter has a series of small tasks to complete, along with some optional tasks. Once completed you continue. The tasks themselves are simple enough.
I did play Inunaki Tunnel with a game guide as I kept walking past the items during my first playthrough and ended up giving up that day. However, sitting down again the second time was a lot easier and I really just used the guide once I felt like I couldn’t work it out. Despite that, the majority of tasks were very simple with the exception of one.
Without spoiling too much, the clock one I found impossible and I used the guide for the answer, but I don’t know how the guide came to the answer.
Audio
The audio was horrifyingly brilliant! The echoing of the steps and water along with the silent void was fantastic. With the footsteps echoing, it made it feel like there was someone walking close by or right next to you, but it was only yours. Combine that with the few times I’m sure there was definitely other footsteps made the whole experience even better.
As the game is set as a found footage type game, the odd, clanky audio fitted the theme and gave it a more off putting feel.
Difficulty
For difficulty, I would say that the game is easy to play. For me it took significant brain usage, however, I can be a bit think and take an age to do some simple tasks.
The tasks, with the clock exemption, were easy to do and related to the story. Each was pretty self explanatory forcing you to explore the entire area to find the solutions to the issue. It made the atmosphere that bit more edgy as you had to walk into some of the darkest spots of the area to complete tasks.
Story
Comparing Inunaki Tunnel to The Convenience Store and The Closing Shift, the story is definitely better this time.
The story has more depth and substance to it. I could feel the history in the letters that were found throughout. It made it feel like I was walking through the actual Urban Legend itself.
The audio and graphics complemented the story very well! It all tied together beautifully, each part helping raise the others.
In order to be fair, the story could have also been enhance by the fact I was playing in a much darker environment than the other two Chilla’s Art games. Since it winter, days get darker faster. I also had my room door as well which always freaks me out in the dark, so playing a horror with noise-cancelling headphones in the dark upped the atmosphere. This could have made the story much better.
Game Time
Playing with a game guide made my progress go a bit faster than it would have if I was just working alone. However, the game time was a perfect length. Nothing felt rushed while nothing felt like it was taking an age to move on.
Controls
The commands for this game are the usual WASD, SHFT for run (more like a gentle jog) and F for a flashlight. Super easy to use and your standard game/horror game.
Price
Inunaki Tunnel is priced at around £2 on Steam (as of writing this its £2.09), so the price perfect. It’s a short and sweet horror. Plus, there is multiple point throughout the year when Chilla’s Art does sales (including bundle sales) on all their games, so it’s even cheaper then!
Bugs
There was not a bug in sight! I never had a single issue with the game!
Fun Factor/Replay Ability
The game was fun with an interesting story. I’ll probably play the game again as there is multiple endings and I never got all the achievements.
Conclusion/My Opinion
Overall, Inunaki Tunnel is a brilliant mini horror game, with a price that matches it lovely. Once again Chilla’s Art has made a short, sweet and interesting game with their signature graphics and audio.
