New Year, New Reading Goals! Failed 2024, Successful 2025?

Hiya!

So, back in January of 2024, I made a post about my reading goal for the year. (You can read it here.) I set a goal of reading twenty books, which I rightfully thought was fair enough since in 2023, I set a goal of ten and ended up reading thirty. So, twenty was fair enough to put down.

Unfortunately, I’ve read fourteen out of twenty. Now, on my Goodreads, it says thirteen, but that is because I read a book that isn’t on the Goodreads database (which is from the publishers I work with, so I need to figure out how to add books to Goodreads).

I am writing this at the start of December so naturally, I’ll have an extra book finished as I’ve still to read Henderbell by J.D. Netto as part of my annual Yule tradition, but still not reaching my goal.

This year threw a lot at me, between my dissertation, finding my internship and that workload, plus the post-graduate job-market stress. You know, that joy. So, I’ve not really felt like reading. I’ve been reading The House That Horror Built by Christina Henry (my favourite author) since May. MAY! I’m both impressed and disappointed.

So, I am a little disappointed in myself there, but I’m happy I at least read more than ten books.

Secondly, I listed books I was excited to read in 2024.

Out of the ten options I had, a mix between standalone and series’ I read only two off that list. Yup! Two!

I read Thornhedge and Ravenfall (just Ravenfall, no other books in that series). I’m sad I never read more of what I wanted to, but I’m also happy with what I’ve read.

Thornhedge was probably one of my favourites, along with The Butcher of the Forest. Both a very short books, which I think added to my enjoyment. I’m looking forward to reading more from T. Kingfisher.

2025

Now that we are into the New Year, it’s time to set new goals. For 2025, I don’t want to have as much pressure on myself, so I’m going to set myself the goal of ten books for this year.

(Surprise! I decided on twenty books again for 2025, but that’s because I now have the completed Nagabe The Girl From The Other Side series which will bulk up my reading, and like four books that are around 150 pages each, so they’ll be easy to get through. Plus, I’ve got like five audiobooks as well, so that will help. So, I’ve kept the same goal as last year.)

Although last year, I tried to decide on what books I wanted to read, I don’t think I’m going to do that this year. I do want to read the T. Kingfisher books I have, and read The Gumhio Series and ACTR series. Obviously, I want to finish The House that Horror Built before May 2025. That’d be nice.

I’m not going to push myself to achieve a goal, as that never seems to work well for me, plus it sucks the fun out of reading. I just want to read and enjoy whatever I read.

Happy reading and happy 2025!

Bye-bye. Love you.
