Hiya!

Everyone is scared of something. If you’re not afraid, then you aren’t human! Simple as that. If you’ve found my wee realm here, then you probably are like me and enjoy myths, legends, paranormal and all other manners of spooky things that live amongst us, so I believe. As an honorary member of the Spooky Club means I am awarded my horrific nightmare pack, which includes fears of mythical creatures. So, I thought as a way to introduce myself to you lovely souls; I would list 7 Creatures I Would Never Want To Meet.

1

Smile Dog

This thing haunted me for years when I first found it. I think I was around fourteen or fifteen when I found out about the smile dog. It was in a countdown YouTube video of scary internet stories. You know, the best side of YouTube for a fourteen-year-old to find herself on!

The image that was used in the video was the one where it sort of looks human-like. However, it was at this moment I realised a fear I never knew I had and that was things that looked human but had no eyelids. To this day any image that has a person with bulging eyes or no eyelids petrifies me. When I say this I mean I am frozen in fear. I can’t look away but at the same time have a panic attack. I need to look away as fast as I can. It really creeps me out. Don’t even get me started on Momo. That thing needs to be killed with fire.

So, what is Smile Dog?

Smile Dog is a creepypasta, who takes the form of a demonically deformed husky. There are different versions of the story of what this nightmare creature is. The main story of Smile Dog is similar to what I know of the Sally Stitch email thread. Smile Dog threatens to end the lives of anyone who has the unfortunate of coming across him unless they spread his picture across the internet; like Sally Stitch.

There isn’t much information about Smile Dog before the internet so it seems to be exclusively invented during the early days of internet culture.

The image (as seen below) depicts what looks like a Siberian husky with an inhumane smile that stretches back to its ears and is accompanied by a human-like hand in the darkness. Some speculate that this creature could be a Hellhound and has found its way here.

This creepypasta was one of the first I was introduced to and still to this day terrifies me.

2

Nuckaleeve

The Nuckeleeve is described as a half-human, half-equine creature primary seen in the Orkney Islands in Celtic and Orcadian Mythology. Primarily found lurking near the river banks, similar to its Mythological cousin the Kelpie, this creature is said to be unstoppable with a single exception. The Sea Mither, a God-like being, is said to be the only being to have any control over the Nuckeleeve.

I discovered this creature a few years back when I decided that I wanted to write stories (and books) and started my research on Scottish and Celtic Mythology. This creature has quickly become one of my favourite mythical beings and I’ve incorporated it into the main storyline of a book series I hope to write one day. The idea that only one being has control over such a highly destructive creature and that the being who can help is only available at certain times of year completely gripped me. The Nuckeleeve essentially has around half a year to cause chaos until the Sea Mither returns.

3

Boobrie

The Boobrie! This wonderful creature may have a funny name but considering I not only live near water but cows to I do not find this funny whatsoever! Creatures like this thing are the reason why staying inside and writing is a safe profession, just saying! Farmers, ye be warned! Specifically, cattle farmers.

The creature known as Boobrie is a massive bird-like creature (think pterodactyl) with human-like hands at the end of its wings. This bird creature exclusively drinks the blood of cattle, however, it will have absolutely zero issues with ripping a person into confetti if they try to save the cattle. I would also like to be clear, Boobrie is said to have no interest in humans. It won’t kill, eat or drink us – they just want the cattle. Although, the Boobrie is always ready for a fight if a human wants to come between it and its meal.

So, in a way, the Boobrie is like a constantly hangry person with murderous tendencies, no moral code and the speed of the Flash (if The Flash was a bird).

4

Wendigo

I first heard of a Wendigo at a very young age, through an episode of Charmed (1998). During the first season, the sisters are faced with a Wendigo that has attacked and infected Piper and they know need to find and stop the creature to save her. Charmed, in my opinion, made the creature look closer to a werewolf than what I’ve seen Wendigos depicted as today.

Supernatural also had an episode in its first season featuring a Wendigo and again it wasn’t what I’ve come to know them as. Definitely a lot creepier than Charmed’s though. Unlike Charmed, Supernatural followed a bit more closely to the original lore of the creature.

From watching both these episodes I found the Wendigo to be a scary creature but nowhere near as terrifying as I find them now. Before they were a creature that I didn’t want to come across but the feelings were meh. However, now I can’t fathom the thought.

Wendigoes originate from Canada and the United States. To be more specific the nightmare fuel comes from First Nations that are in and around the East Coast forest of Canada and the Great Plains and Great Lakes region of the United States.

Regardless of the fact that the Wendigo inhabits land that is on the other side of the planet from me, my mind thinks it’s hilarious to make me believe that some noises I hear while out on Chewy’s nighttime walk are, in fact, a Wendigo. My mind hates me.

5

Tall Legged Fae Creature

I’m not sure if this creature has a name or is just something that people have started making costumes of but either way it is terrifying and needs to stop.

I’ve named it “Tall Legged Fae Creature” because, well, thats the best way to describe it. I saw this for the first time when I was maybe around sixteen and from a YouTube video.

I should probably mention that YouTube pretty much fueled this side of me and probably gave me most of my fears and nightmares but I continue to watch this stuff to this day. Yes, it still scares me.

Looking at a picture of it isn’t that awful, as long as it keeps the emotionless expression. I’ve seen others that have contorted, inhuman faces. The part where it creeps me out is when it starts walking. The videos make it seem like it glides more than walk and the horrifies me.

6

Children

(Changelings/Black-Eyed Children)

Don’t get me wrong, children, in general, can be terrifying, but children in folklore and legends are true nightmare fuel! If I met a lone child in a dark street my only option would be as follows

1 Punt the child

2 Runaway

3 Cry

4 Cry, Punt, Runaway.

5 Freeze and accept my death

I hold no hope for myself in that situation and would probably go with number five. Why? Because I’m a scaredy-cat.

Changelings and Black-Eyed Children are two different tales from what I know but both are just as awful as each other.

Changelings are fairy or demon children, normally a baby, who is switched with a human child. They will either look like the taken child or the parents will be made to believe that the new child is their child. The new child is sometimes said to be sick and the new human parents are forced to believe that their healthy baby is now sick. As for the taken human child, I’ve seen stories say that the child is taken back to the place where the faerie (not heard about the demon story much) and the child would be raised to help the faerie. This help can come in the form of becoming as close to one of them as possible or like a slave to them.

Black-Eyed Children, on the other hand, are worse in my opinion. And that is only because I saw videos on them when I was in my early teenage years so naturally, they haunt me. These children are characterised as being children between the ages of six to sixteen with pale skin and pure black eyes. Considered to be an American Contemporary Legend, there was a woman who was said to have spotted and captured a Black-Eyed Child on camera in England.

7

Teke-Teke

Again, another YouTube horror from my younger teenage years. I hate this. I stay away from this one a bit just because it freaks me out so much.

To be completely honest, I find Japanese mythology and legends to be some of the best and most terrifying ones out there. Any time I am presented with Japanese mythology and legends I go one of two ways; caught up in the wonder and lost in the magic of it all, or completely horrified and nightmares for weeks. Teke-Teke is no different.

The legend of Teke-Teke one takes place at train stations. The story goes that a young women or girl fell onto the train tracks and was then severed in half from the waist down. She is known as an onryō, which is said to mean a vengeful spirit accounting to The Business Standard. Just like vengeful spirits that are widely known, Teke-Teke spends her new eternal existence looking to inflict upon others what happened to her.

Just imagine seeing her silhouette in the middle of the night. She wouldn’t have to come near me, I’d just die on the spot for her. Like, no, I’m good, my dude. Nope, nope, nope.

A bonus creature!

Hippos… as in Hippopotamus. This is only because I recently found out they do not swim but run along the ocean/water floor. I’m not okay with that at all. There is no need for that.

So, that was 7 creatures I would never want to meet, plus a bonus creature with the Hippo. There are many more than 7 creatures I would never want to meet, so I will probably do more of these lists!

Bye!
